Smash is an upcoming NBC series starring Debra Messing set to premiere in mid-season of 2012.The series is based on an idea by Steven Spielberg, who is also one of the show's executive producers. The show was originally developed by NBC Entertainment president Robert Greenblatt when he was still president of entertainment at Showtime and who brought it with him when he went to NBC.
PLOT
The show revolves around a group of characters who come together to put on a Broadway musical, which will be based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. But before that can happen, the people who will try to bring it all together must deal with their own personal acts.
CAST
Debra Messing as Julia, a songwriter/lyricist and the musical's co-writer
Brian D'Arcy James as Frank, Julia's husband
Christian Borle as Tom, Julia's co-writing partner on the project
Katharine McPhee as Karen, an Iowan who lands a successful audition and becomes the favorite for the role of Monroe
Jack Davenport as Derek, the brilliant (and womanizing) director of the musical, who is hoping for a breakout with the musical even if it means putting the lead in a compromising position
Megan Hilty as Ivy Lynn, a veteran actress who was favored to land the Monroe lead until Karen came into the picture. She finds herself competing with the newcomer after being told that she was too old to play the part
Anjelica Huston as Eileen, the musical's tenacious producer, who is dealing with divorce proceedings from her husband, which could threaten the musical
Raza Jaffrey as Dev, Karen's live-in boyfriend, who works at the Mayor's office

Got the episode from iTunes, wasn't impressed at all!

My best guess is that they're officially introducing her as an actress. Yeah, she's done a few roles here and there before, but this is her first major headlining role in anything. They put "Introducing Megan Hilty" in a few promos too I'm guessing for the same reason.
So excited for this to air. The last five minutes of the pilot was enough to convince me.
